Optimization as the default design strategy
Implementing optimization methodologies changes the design Engineers mind-set from asking the question "Is the design good enough?", to asking the better question "What design is just good enough?". The presentation will show case examples of how optimization drives the design process.

Threaded Joints for Critical Applications
Conventional threaded joint design uses established engineering principles that imply linear behavior. As a joint approaches failure, the behavior becomes non-linear.
Such instances occurs on high performance missiles. As a result, it is analysed non-linearly and combined with VDI code 2230. This takes joint stiffness into account.

Development of a tyre inflation pressure controller to improve ride comfort
The aim of this project is to improve ride comfort of vehicles over rough terrains. A ride comfort controller will monitor the passenger(s) ride comfort. When a vehicle changes from driving on a smooth road to a rough road the passenger(s) will feel uncomfortable. The ride comfort controller then decreases the tyre pressure to improve the passenger(s) comfort. When the vehicle returns to a smooth road the ride comfort controller will increase the tyre pressure to the normal driving tyre pressure.
