Every month when I write this introduction and reflect on the month that has passed, it feels like a lifetime to report on. This past month was especially busy with SIMTEQ exhibiting at both Electra Mining and the AAD Expo while also hosting technical experts from Hexagon D&E.
If you haven’t visited the Electra Mining Expo during the past few years, it isn’t possible to grasp just how big the event is. With tens of thousands of visitors passing through every day and close to 600 companies exhibiting, it was literally impossible to see everything on show.

The most important takeaway for me from the event was how it changed everyone there's view of the state of our economy and hope for the future for the better.

It is so easy to have a limited view of the width and depth of the active economy, especially due to an increase in online meetings and less travelling and social interaction with other professionals.  Electra Mining surely changed that.

The AAD Expo was another showcase of world-class logistics and the willingness of local (and foreign) companies to bring their best to the table. We had loads of fun entertaining children and professionals alike with Clinton's aero experiments and surely sparked an interest amongst many.

It is a pity that we could not visit everyone with Carsten from Romax and Maxime from Cradle but for those who had the opportunity, it again emphasised the deep technical connections we have with Hexagon and how this is giving our customers a competitive edge.

We are looking forward to what the next month will hold.

Regards
Managing Director

You had to be there

Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2022

The premier exhibition of Air, Sea and Land technologies on the African continent

With just one week buffer between Electra Mining and AAD2022, September was by far the busiest month of the year. AAD came and went, loud as thunder, like the Gripen. If you were there, you would know! The event was a massive success with loads of networking and interaction from both the industry and the public. The spectrum of exhibitors and quality of the exhibitions was of an exceptional standard. We would like to thank everyone who came by and said Hi.

We hope to see you all again in 2024 for #AAD2024!

Electra Mining Africa (EMA) 2022

All things Mining, Electrical, Automation, Manufacturing, Power, and Transport

It's been a long time coming, 4 years in the making, all thanks to Covid19 taking the world by storm. The previous EMA was in 2018! EMA2022 was massive and took place in Joburg, Nasrec, just one week before AAD2022. Nevertheless, the event was also a big success with leads taking us all over South Africa. Thank you for all for the interactions and loquacious conversations.

You will find us again at EMA2024!

Dytran

Dytran is a short-duration, explicit finite element solver. Unfortunately, this is the technical description for a solver that cannot be described fully in a single sentence.

Dytran’s structural finite element and finite volume flow capability, with the option to use both approaches in a truly coupled fluid-structure interaction simulation, makes the possible applications almost endless.

The range of industries that benefit from the capabilities of Dytran, ranges from aerospace, and consumer goods, to the military. With specific solutions that include bird strike simulation, fuel tank rupture, airbag deployment, impact and crash testing, blast and shape-charge simulation, drop testing, packaging and sheet metal forming, Dytran is truly a capable and robust solution for your industry.

Some of Dytran’s core strengths is its ability to handle complex contact and structural failure analyses with or without fluid-structure interaction. This, in conjunction with a wide range of material models that could represent anything from steel, rubber and concrete to air, liquids and explosives with failure, yielding and even spallation options available (where applicable), sets Dytran apart from your normal linear and non-linear analysis packages.

However, all these options would not be as useful without Dytran’s capability to use both SMP (shared memory parallel) and DMP (distributed memory parallel) either separately or combined (depending on the application) to reduce the solving time associated with complex analyses.

20 Mechanical Principles

How many methods of motion transfer / mechanical principles can you name?

This video from the Brick Experiment Channel showcases twenty mechanical principles, from the well-known bevel and worm gears to the more exotic Schmidt coupling and Chebyshev Lambda linkage. All were created using Lego and packaged together into a single Lego machine. The owner of the channel calls it a Useless Lego Machine, but from a mechanical perspective, this is a work of art.
